Norðlýsið was built at the shipyard in Tórshavn and was finished on the 5th og May 1945. A historic date indeed. Then the ship was rigged as a sloop with main and mesan masts and was used for fishing with handline, longline, jigging reel and nets.

In the 80s the Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson acquired the retired ship and rebuilt it into the fantastic blue schooner that we know and love today. He considers Norðlýsið among his greatest works of art.

Since the 90s Norðlýsið has offered its services in the tourist trade. The well-known skipper Birgir Enni has made the ship an icon of Faroese hospitality. He retired in 2019, but the tradition of hospitality and good seamanship is embedded in the oak planks forever. New able hands are on the steering pole and the purpose is unchanged. To give you a unique experience of the Faroe Islands in a safe and friendly environment.

From January 2020 to May 2021 the ship went into dry dock for major restoration and improvements. The engine was replaced and new sails fitted. Improvements have also been made to the general conditions for our guests and crew. Two modern toilets are onboard and the large salon has modern ventilation and heating. The kitchen has been upgraded to restaurant standards.
